nursing mothers

new at 11....we've all heard of a sit in. but we begin tonight ... with a nurse-in? more than a dozen mothers gathered at an upstate walmart to protest...after a woman says she was harassed for nursing inside the store. wyff news four's liz lohuis

joins us live and local in greenville county. liz ... that's where it happened. i'm live here outside walmart on white horse road...where the nurse-in took place this afternoon. a mother says she was discriminated against...and now

walmart is apologizing. it's an issue these moms say they refuse to cover up.

cooler and began to nurse her son...when about 10 employees surrounded her. <"they were staring and saying how disgusting it was what i was doing and how offended they were that i was doing it and that i should cover my self and go somewhere else and was what i

was doing even legal? colabella says she stopped nursing... and demanded to talk to the general manager. she says she was denied...so she called walmart headquarters. colabella says she was told the situation would be reviewed and someone would get back with her.

<"i feel i was discriminated against as a breast-feeding mother-- that i was a lesser human being than any other customer in there." colabella organized a nurse-in monday... gathered in the store...breastfeeding freely and waving signs. we asked customers

to weigh in on what they saw. <"i think it's something all women should be able to do in public and not be harassed by people who think it is nasty, gross or disgusting because it is something natural." <"i just think they should be in a certain place. they should

not be in a grocery store where they can walk around in front of you and basically say, see what i am doing? that's how they are acting in there" walmart spokesman randy hargrove say they are aware of the report...and are looking into it. in a statement he said....

we welcome nursing mothers to breastfeed their child in our store. we recognize the intimate and personal nature of the decision a mother makes to breastfeed their child -- and we never want to make her feel unwelcome in our stores because of it. we apologize if our

customer felt uncomfortable during her store visit. if something goes wrong, or there's a misunderstanding in one of our stores, we want to know about it so we can address it right away. two hours after the nurse-in...colabella says she also heard from walmart. the

local marketing manager apologized...and said the store plans to educate employees about breastfeeding and how to be courteous to nursing mothers. liz lohuis wyff news four live in greenville county.
